    Sweet 16 on April 16th
    Sweet Sixteen in the Spring.
That in a nutshell is what the Rebel 400 will be Sunday,
April 16th, when the stockers return to Darlington Race-
way for their annual spring migration.
One thing is for sure, the Rebel 400 is not just another
race on the NASCAR circuit. No other track on the circuit
puts as much premium on the driver as Darlington.
The mile and three eighths high banked, egg-shaped
oval has been the scene of out-and-out thrills and ex-
citement. And with only 36 cars starting the 400-mile
run, it's more like a trophy dash.
The 1972 edition, which will be run in April this year,
could very well re-write the record books at Darlington.
Buddy Baker copped the 1971 Rebel 400. After Baker
and Donnie Allison battled bumper to bumper for more
than 100 miles, Baker finally got the checker flag when
the engine in Allison's Glen Wood Mercury let go nine
    laps from the finish.
It was Dodge's initial victory in a Rebel race, long
    dominated by Ford products.
A new twist, in the form of Bobby Allison driving Junior
Johnson's Chevy, will be added this year. Allison copped
22nd Southern 500 at Darlington last Labor Day in
    Holman-Moody Mercury.
Chevrolet only has one Rebel 400 victory to its credit,
that coming in 1959 when the late Fireball Roberts got
    the winner's flag.
The Rebel 400 competition can not be equaled. Only
one driver has ever scored back-to-back wins in this
event. Richard Petty holds the honor with victories in
    1966-67, in a Plymouth.
Maybe David Pearson summed up running Darlington
best, "Handling, nerves and a lot of luck are the ingredi-
    ents for success at Darlington."

    Make It A Race Vacation
    Warm Days and cool nights.
They immediately turn your thoughts to things like fish-
ing, swimming, golf, racing and outdoor sports.
That's exactly what the Rebel 400, April 16th at Darl-
ington Raceway has in store for you this year. You can
do it all within 80 miles of Darlington Raceway.
The beautiful beaches of South Carolina's Grand Strand
are only 80 miles east of Darlington. Here you can enjoy
50 miles of wide and sandy white beaches with Myrtle
Beach as its hub. Myrtle Beach is an entertainment and
recreation area for the entire family. Amusement parks
and championship golf courses, white sandy beaches,
swimming and fishing, excellent restaurants and a wide
range of accommodations make the South Carolina coast
    an ideal vacation spot.
The State Park at the beach offers camping and recrea-
tion facilities, rental cabins and a fishing pier. Salt water
fishing is excellent along the South Carolina coast, but if
its fresh water fishing you prefer, the Santee-Cooper lakes
should be your destination. The two lakes (Marion and
Moultrie) are just about 80 miles south of Darlington and
offer some of the best sport fishing in the world. Land-
locked striped bass, up to 55 pounds, are their trademark.
The lakes are also excellent for largemouth bass, crappie,
    bream, white bass and catfish.
If you happen to get in town just for the Rebel 400
qualifying, which begins April 13, you might want to see
the Florence Air and Missile Museum which will delight
the children. Thirteen planes and four units of ground
artillery are on display in this outdoor museum, located
next to the Florence Airport. Wings and Wheels Museum
at Santee, on the other hand, houses the largest collec-
tion of old aircrafts in the world.
No matter what's your favorite, South Carolina has it.
Not only the finest in NASCAR racing at Darlington Race-
way, but the best in the other sports.

    Joe Weatherly Museum
Ever wonder what it was like to see the pioneers of
racing, Curtis Turner, Fireball Roberts, Joe Weatherly,
Junior Johnson, Buck Baker, and Herb Thomas go at it,
    head to head?
The closest you will ever get to that again is the Joe
Weatherly Stock Car Museum at Darlington Raceway. The
Museum, located next to the main office of the Raceway,
houses all the cars of these famous drivers plus a couple
of the young lions of today, Richard Petty and Fred
    Lorenzen.
In all, two decades of racing will unfold right in front
of your eyes in the Museum. Not only can you get close
enough to touch the cars of these famous drivers, but
via tapes installed in the Museum, you can actually hear
conservations with Baker, Roberts, Weatherly and others.
Admission is free and the doors to the Museum are
open every day during the summer.

In addition to the largest collection of stock racing cars
in the nation, the Museum also houses a large collection
of photos, trophies, illegal parts collected from drivers
and mechanics, and safety items mandatory by NASCAR.
Also on display in the Museum is the Union 76/Darling-
ton Record Club showcase, Champion's Buddy Shuman
award presented annually and the National Motorsports
Press Association Hall of Fame. Curtis Turner was in-
ducted into this showcase of stars last year.
The Museum was named after one of the sport's all-
time greats, the late Joe Weatherly. In addition to two of
Weatherly's trophy cases, his Mercury is located at the
    entrance to the Museum.
